GIRL POWER is a documentary that will present graffiti writers from fifteen cities around the world from Prague, through Moscow, Cape Town, Sydney, Biel, Madrid, Berlin, Toulouse, Barcelona to New York. The graffiti community is overwhelmingly made up of men, who often believe that graffiti – and especially illegal graffiti – is not for women. Nevertheless, women have become more emancipating in graffiti in recent years, creating women’s graffiti exhibitions, magazines and websites. It captures the stories of women who have survived in a predominantly male graffiti world.
It is not only an insight into the graffiti world, it also captures the strong story of the Czech writer Sana, who in 2008 decided to capture the emancipation of women in graffiti and give women and girls the opportunity to express themselves. In the documentary, which she shot for 7 long years, we follow her life with graffiti, motivation and life values that change over the years. We will also meet her original family, who have no idea about her second life. Sany sacrifices a lot for the film and even when she comes to an end, she refuses to give up her dream – to make the historically first documentary mapping women in graffiti.
